The rain

It's raining today. I like rain, I find it soothing, and it does fun things to my hair. It is also raining opportunity...which I find usually happens as soon as I've given up on things. That universe, it just keeps throwing me for loops.

Yes, I had decided to give painting another go, with intent and seriousness and all that. No, it did not work out as my day job got busier and more multi-faceted, my home life (and my studio) got too chaotic and the muse was on an extended leave of absence.

During this period of creative hiatus, I revisited some of my older book ideas and one of them stood out as being exciting and I was (am) re-inspired to make that happen sooner rather than later. Currently, I'm working on this new (old) book idea during my "me" time, working on Tri-Art related things in most of my other time, and cooking vast quantities of food in the rest of the time (sometimes fun, mostly just messy and time consuming).

Having given up of the painting idea (temporarily of course), I hear word this weekend that I am being offered a solo show in Toronto.

Be still my heart.

I am doing my best not to panic, and to move forward with the Tri-Art work, the new book, the domestic work and produce a cohesive collection of paintings...all of it. I find it oddly comforting that I enjoy this sort of rain too. Rather than sending me into a screaming panic, I find this to be rather calming.

Strange...but good.

Follow my group on Facebook!

Hi folks, I have not taken the time to figure out how to plop a facebook button on to my blog and have it direct you to my group page rather than my personal page, so I'm plopping this basic link into this post instead.

I like to invite you to join my FB group, if you are an FB user. I would also like to ask you to please not ask me to friend you on FB, as I prefer to keep my professional and personal networking compartmentalized whenever possible.

Thanks!

a glimpse into process

By popular request, I will talk about process here for a while, rather than going on little diatribes about how frustrating non-productive times are for me, etc.

So here goes. This piece was produced about 1 1/2 years ago. It's on a cradled panel, and comprised mainly of five colours, three mediums,(all Tri-Art, goes without saying, but I thought I'd say it anyway) and graphite (wide stick, 4B).

Tools of choice:
  1. 3" flat colour shaper.
  2. 2" angled flat white taklon brushes
  3. long (9") off-set handled palette knife
Colours: Payne's Grey, prussian blue, zinc white, warm white. There could also be some titanium white in there, who remembers.

Mediums: Dry media ground, gloss & matte polymer mediums, gloss gel.

Dry media: graphite, compressed charcoal

The warm buff tone is the wood of the panel showing through. This piece is a build up of thin transparent glazes, it took several days to produce. The raised textural areas (created either by extruding gel, or manipulating it with tools) were accentuated by dragging the graphite stick sideways in smooth repetitive motions. In real life, those edges gleam, love graphite for that.

Some of the darks were achieved by dragging the loose charcoal dust around with my mediums. There are matte and glossy areas on the painting (top = matte, bottom = gloss).

It is an unintentional landscape. I don't generally paint landscapes, although I do like horizon lines. This is contradictory, I know. Still not sure if I truly love the piece, but it calms me...I just wish it was bigger, a lot bigger. (it's about 16" x 20")

If this lack of creative output keeps up I may have to just write another book!

Seriously, it's a disaster.

Every attempt at art making has been a frustrating and deflating experience. Impossible to cast my expectations aside. So I have stopped for the moment, loath to add another surface to the crappy picture pile. Feh.

So...I'm digging (both mentally and in the guise of spring cleaning) through my collections of stuff. Notes, old drawings, stacks of paper goodies, collage treasures and scrap papers.

What have I found so far?

That my grocery lists are terrifyingly identical, that I have a LOT of cool stuff, a LOT of pointless ugly stuff, and that despite it's breadth and range, there is some sort of harmony to my chaotic hoards.

Where will this take me?

I think into another book. One thing I have discovered through my time as a book maker (author still sounds not quite right), is that organizing my stuff and thoughts into the swirly business of a book project is just the type of energy that throws out inspiration as some sort of bonus exhaust.

Here's to hoping that if not some artwork that works, then perhaps a book to inspire other people to make artwork that works will come from this exploration.

And if I'm really, really lucky, maybe a decent painting too.

stencils

Handmade, store bought, improvised...stencils are a great break-through-the-block tool. Sometimes I just need to paint something, work with a texture, but I'm empty of shapes, of images, of anchors. I turn to the stencil and my gels. It may not be wholly original, however, it can be a starting point, or the tassel than finishes the piece.

Trapped

Acrylic "tread", trapping a metal object into a paintscape. Extruding high viscosity paints and mediums is a way of drawing, or creating textured, detailed relief. A past spent in the exploration of garments, sewing and costume design, has left a residual imprint. The stitch.

I am certainly not at the peak of my creative abilities right now, but I thought I needed a little visual, to help me keep reaching.

The day to day things that need to get done for shows, classes, the paint factory in general, (not to mention the family stuff) keeps pulling rank on art for arts sake. I'm longing for long stretches of uninterrupted time, to ponder, to try, to fail, to do. Think I need to learn how to back away from the multi-task monster, and compartmentalize my time in terms of days, not hours.

I've always like Thursdays, I think I'll make them my me days, my working towards a peak days.
